Here is a very beautiful santos or possibly theatrical crown which probably dates from around the turn of the last century.
It is made in polishes brass filigree in a beautiful openwork design. Resting upon the hair is an open gallery prong set with large clear faceted crystals. Above these is an elaborate scrolled and trellised design of brass openwork set at intervals with red and blue glass stones. The finishing touch are the seven trefoil motifs which are raised up to form a coronet effect in front. They diminish in size towards the extremities and each is set with a blue stone in the center. The coronet has the usual “ball and slot” closing mechanism at the rear by which the diameter can be adjusted.
A santo (English: 'saint') is a piece of one of various religious art forms found in Spain and areas that were colonies of the Kingdom of Spain consisting of wooden or ivory statues that depict various saints, angels, or the Virgin Mary. Headdresses are also an integral part of a santos, often encrusted with costume jewellery (such as paste and rhinestones) or real precious stones, to symbolize the spiritual wealth of the saint. Regal figures wear the costly corona or coronet, usually made of plated silver or brass and set with glass jewels.
In France, they were destroyed during the Revolution, then remade during the period from 1850-1890 (each parish took up donations from parishioners to purchase these iconic items). Around 1940, the Pope ordered the sale of all items in the Catholic parishes of France that were not "completely necessary". Santos and Madonna crowns, along with vestments and statues were unceremoniously sold into the antique markets. They are now widely collected and seldom found in such good condition as this example.
