Here we have a beautiful and very dainty example of a classic hinged late Victorian hair comb. It is made in the form of a stylised flower with six petals, made up of large faceted crystals. These are set into a brass mount whose details can be seen in some of the pictures.
The main feature is that the heading is adjustable, being attached to the prongs by a flexible hinge of gilt metal, which allows it to rotate through 90 or more degrees. coiffure. This attractive type of hair accessory was specifically designed to be worn in different parts of the hairdressing, according to the fancy of the owner. It was probably once part of a pair or set.
The final illustration shows a number of contemporary examples of fancy hair pins styles as flower, sun or star shapes. These were usually placed in the hair dressing in a prominent place.
This comb is an excellent example of the smaller and lighter hair accessories which became fashionable in the period around the turn of the 20th century. The fashionable hair style was now the Gibson Girl look, with the hair dressed over pads and wisps escaping at the sides. This softer and more feminine look demanded lighter and more delicate ornaments than hitherto. Small rhinestone hair combs, those made of filigree or with a light and airy appearance, were the most popular.
