This is a pretty vintage mid 20th century matched pair of Mexican side combs. The combs are marked on the back “Made in Mexico” and "sterling".
Each has a silver metal heading riveted onto a commercial celluloid comb mount. The designs with chubby repousee scroll work and turquoise cabochons are traditional.
Mexican sterling silver jewellery is mostly crafted in Taxco, a beautiful town located in the mountains of the state of Guerrero on the west coast of Mexico. Mexican artisans from Taxco have long been renowned worldwide for their handcrafted sterling silver jewellery.
There has been a lively trade since the 1950s in inexpensive hair combs and barrettes made from silver or silver tone metal. Other semi precious and semi precious materials such as turquoise, coral mother of pearl and abalone are often added.
These silver comb headings and barrettes come in various designs, typically flowers, leaves, bows, shells and butterflies. The designs are beautifully worked by hand and then attached to celluloid comb mounts in faux tortoiseshell or clear finish.
These pretty little combs are classic and discreet. They would be ideal for a professional woman to wear for work or to brighten up an every day outfit for a dressy occasion.
