This is a beautiful vintage Japanese "fantasy" hairpin of the type called "kanzashi." These showy and glitzy geisha wedding sets are difficult to date as they have been made in the same style for decades. This one probably dates from the 1970s – 1980s.
It is a lovely vintage Japanese hair pin made from gold tone metal with two long tines. The heading takes the form of a flower and leaf cluster decorated with coral beads.
These hair accessories with elaborate headings or tops in the form of a flower cluster are a typical Japanese type. They are worn in such a way that the ornamental mounting stands proud of the head. In this way it can be admired from all angles.
These are ornamental Japanese hairpins of the type known as Kanzashi. This is a kind of umbrella term which covers ornaments of many types. This hair ornament would have been part of a complete traditional wedding set which included two sets of ornamental Japanese hairpins with long dangling ends and an ornamental comb. Hairpins such as these were usually stuck into the coiffure in such a way that the ornamental heading or top stood out proud from the hairdressing by several inches.
Kanzashi hairpins can easily be worn with a modern Western hair style such as a high up do or French pleat. They look most effective when placed in the traditional way with the ornamental ball or bead standing out proud from the surface of the hair.
