Here is a beautiful ceremonial crown headdress from Indonesia, traditionally worn by brides as part of an elaborate wedding ensemble.
The headdress is skilfully and beautifully made, with pale gold gilt which has been shaped, engraved into a delicate filigree design featuring scroll motifs. It is studded with rhinestones and aurora borealis which catch the light in an enchanting way.
The shape of the headdress gives it an almost Russian feel. It is certainly a tiara fit for a princess!
This lovely tiara is a traditional Indonesian ceremonial headdress, worn for part of the traditional wedding costume of Sumatra. The tiara has a traditional design of sacred and symbolic motifs in filigree gold brass which are inspired by lotus flowers. Covered in hundreds of aurora borealis diamantes and rhinestones which shimmer as the wearer moves.
The crown has three long metal tines set at a 45 degree angle to the tiara part. It is intended to be worm by an Indonesian bride with piled up hair and these spikes pierce the hair to hold it in position. For further security elastic or ribbons could be attached through the holes at the extremities.
Large and elaborate headdresses are still part of the traditional dress worn on festive and ceremonial occasions such as weddings in Borneo, Sarawak, Sumatra, Java and other western islands of Indonesia. Elaborate metal headings gilded, embossed and engraved are attached to combs and worn tiara like on the front or top of the head. These are frequently accompanied by many quivering metallic pins set with rhinestones and adding sparkle.
Such hair combs and headdresses are still part of the wedding regalia for bridal couples. In the past they were passed down through families as treasured heirlooms. However many families have reluctantly sold their treasured possessions. As a result original and handsomely crafted combs and headdresses are finding their way into western collections. Complete outfits of wedding regalia for both bride and groom are now usually rented from a Pemaes or specialist company who also does the bridal make up and hairdressing for the great day.
