This pretty little Art Nouveau hair comb is made in antiqued silver tone metal and has a distinctive openwork design of two repousee flowers placed on either side of a corded motif. This pretty comb was probably hand made by an artisan.
The stylistic movement known as Art Nouveau is characterised by its use of various naturalistic motifs, such as flora and fauna, or by free flowing lines and organic shapes, often combined into an asymmetric design.
The Art Nouveau movement was an attempt to reject the mechanical and vulgar commercialism which affected the applied arts in the late 19th century. Art Nouveau practitioners attempted to return to the Medieval ideal whereby an item was designed and made by the same craftsperson, using traditional techniques and hand working. Some of the most beautiful and sympathetic treatments of Art Nouveau, appear in combs and hairpins. However, in practice, many of the ornaments produced by this school exhibit a curious naivety, and lack the sophistication of the exotic designs produced in Europe.
