Here is a pretty little comb dating from the mid 20th century. It is made in a fashion which is the USA is known as Hollywood Regency. This is a glamorous and glitzy style, influenced by the screen goddesses of the 1930s onward. It was a reaction against the austerity of Art Deco with its use of rhinestones and ornate settings.
This lovely little comb clip is made in silver tone metal and is smothered with AB rhinestones, which first appeared in the 1950s. These stones became the trademark of the Hollywood Regency style and were often combined with faux pearls and other coloured rhinestones for maximum effect. The ornament is also hinged, which makes it versatile for situating anywhere in the hair dressing.
The collage picture features contemporary illustrations of the period from fashion magazines. They show the kinds of hair ornaments and hairdressing in vogue in this glamorous period.
Hollywood Regency (or neo-baroque as it is called in the UK) is a design language made for luxury. It includes elements such as voluptuous patterns, floral ornaments and embellishments in all shapes and sizes. In jewellery and personal ornaments we find strong lines and visual contrasts of say red and gold or black and gold, as well as royal or mystical colours such as purple and mauve. Favourite motifs include scrollwork, heavy overblown flowers and fat volutes, often combined into designs which are asymmetrical. These are heavily embellished with large gemstones, pearls and rhinestones.
