FURTHER INFORMATION:
In the 1970s the “back to nature” trend continued a popular taste for natural materials and motifs which were begin in the 1960s by the hippies. Much popular jewellery incorporated materials such as bone, mother of pearl, agates, turquoise and coral. Faux materials which resembled these materials and glass and resin nuggets are also found in jewellery.
Artisan jewellery became popular and many ornaments had a distinctive “hand made” appearance. Surface treatments such as engraving, repousee, piercing and enameling were widely used for the decoration of jewellery made from plain metal. Some pieces had a distinctive three dimensional look. Ethnic and cultural influences, particularly Egyptian and Aztec, were high fashion during this period.
