Buch and Deichmann (B&D) Denmark started up in the early 1970's. A designer by the name of Ketty Dalsgaard was inspired from the shiny rings from the moorings from fishing boats in Denmark to create a line of bright coloured plastic bracelets. The collection subsequently grew to include plastic pins, earrings, chokers and the much coveted hair accessories.
By the 1980's, B&D focused mostly on quirky hair accessories that were carried in high-end department store throughout the world such as Harrods, Galleries Lafayette, and Bloomingdales. Consequently they have become very collectible.
Buch + Deichmann items are all stamped with the companies name and 'Denmark somewhere on the back.
The costume jewellery industry flourished in the 1980s, and women experienced a new freedom and confidence to wear frankly fake fashion jewellery. In fact, the bigger and glitzier the better! After falling out of fashion in the 1970s plastics were again popular for personal ornaments. These new items were made in every colour of the rainbow as well as fancy spotted, striped and patterned effects.
