Vintage powder compact in brass decorated with yellow and blue enamel in an unusual “poured paint” modernist effect.
This is a wonderful collectible vanity item typical of the Med Men era in more or less mint unused condition. Excellent for adding to a collection of vintage vanity items, for display or use.
This vintage piece came from a manufacturer's warehouse where it had been in storage for many years. It is unused, never having been on the market. It was a sample piece and date in style from the 1960's or before. However there are no manufacturing labels, identifying marks or anything I could find on the individual piece.
The base material of the compact is brass. The lid is brass and has a metal lid decorated with yellow and blue enamel in an unusual “poured paint” modernist effect.
Inside the lid is a mirror. The hinge is not loose and works well. The closure snaps shut and works well. There is no powder puff or sifter.
As an art movement modernism is concerned primarily with essential qualities of colour and flatness, form and function, and exhibits a reduction of interest in subject matter or surface decoration. The modernist style in jewellery and personal items, with its clean lines, is a natural successor of the late Art Deco style of the 1930s, also called Art Moderne.
Modernist ornaments are simpler and more sculptural. Rather than being embellished with faceted stones they rely upon minimal surface decoration and upon the excitement of movement and drama for their impact. The salient points in this type of design are a concentration upon craftsmanship, integrity of materials and quality of finish.
