DESCRIPTION:

Here is a very beautiful back comb which probably dates from the Edwardian period of the early 20th century.

The comb mount is made from celluloid faux tortoiseshell of a dark brown hue, and has a series of unusual wavy tines which were designed to assist it in gripping the hair. Along the top of the rectangular heading is a metal mounting in antiques silver tone metal. This is set with a row of clear rhinestones with large and smaller ones alternating to create a very pretty effect.

Arising from this metal border are a series of metal spikes which are also set along their length with clear stones. Mounted upon the top of each spike is a spherical faux pearl. The pearls are graduated in size and also in height, so that they alternate between large and small, as well as high and low.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

A back comb is a type of hair accessory specifically designed to be worn at the back of the hairdressing either above, below or within the chignon. Usually identified by a deep curve made to fit the skull, such combs are usually wider than they are high and have an elaborate heading or top decorated in some way.

Ornaments dating from the late Victorian and Edwardian periods are usually fairly simple. They tend to have an affixed gilt metal, silver tone or sterling frame which is adorned with prong set rhinestones or faux gems.

At the turn of the 20th century the hair was worn in a distinctive puffed out style which has become familiar from the drawings of Charles Dana Gibson. This is also known as a Pompadour style, and often incorporated the use of underlying pads and false hair. It was supported at the back of the head and sometimes at the sides as well by wide hair combs, which might be as plain or as fancy as the wearer desired. These combs also helped to support the huge hats of the late Victorian and Edwardian period.
