This unusual two pronged hair comb or hair pin has a decorative in the form of a figural lion.
The lion is nicely done with a lot of character. The gold tone modelling shows his mane and black “jet” rhinestones make piercing eyes. He has a large simulated ruby in his mouth.
This comb dates from the mid century but is in an established tradition of ornaments in which a figural lion is shown with a large “jewel” grasped in its jaws. Lion faced statues, often depicted grasping a jewel in their mouth, are traditional in Japanese art and were believed to have the power to repel evil spirits. The tradition was again taken up in the early 20th century when we find lion head bandeaux and tiaras, made in the fashionable “oriental” style.
