A large and magnificent pyrope garnet Victorian hair comb

CONDITION: good vintage condition

SIZE: 4½ ins h x 3 ins w (11 x 7.5 cm)

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1880-1900

MATERIALS: vermeil, pyrope garnets

DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful late Victorian hair accessory is one of the largest and most handsome garnet combs I have seen.

The heading of the comb is vermeil (gilded brass) and is attached to the comb mount by a rotating hinge which allows it to be moved into different positions. The heading is of openwork design and thickly set with vari-shape garnets. I see circular, pear and lozenge shapes, among others. The garnets are a deep red hue, fairly well saturated. They have good clarity and typical inclusions. The stones are in good condition with some abrasion and minor nibbles to the facets of the larger stones.

The effect of these stones in this large and handsome ornament is a deep, shimmery pool of sangria colour that catches the light and transforms it.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

Garnets are the quintessentially Victorian stones used in ornaments and jewellery throughout the period. Victorian jewellers loved to set the small, brilliant-cut stones en masse, clustering scores of garnets in brooches, necklaces, earrings, rings and hair combs

The word garnet is believed to have come from the Latin granatus, for pomegranate. These stones are often termed Bohemian garnets. The “Bohemian” aspect derives from the fact the stones had been mined for centuries in what is the Czech Republic today, but was Bohemia until 1918. Though there are different colours and kinds of garnets, Bohemians are of the pyrope variety, a deep rich red. Bohemian garnets' popularity peaked from 1860 to about 1890.
