Here is a very handsome mid to late Victorian hair comb which is made in a delicate openwork design of cast metal. The curved heading is attached to a comb mount with four long metal tines to pierce the hair and hold it firmly in place.
Usually combs like this are hinged to allow the heading to rotate but this is not the case with this ornament. The curved tiara portion, with its delicate gold tone metal tracery, is fixed into position.
As with all tiara combs the tines are set at a 45 degree angle from the heading. When the ornament if placed in wear on top of the head the heading is slightly raised up, as seen from the pictures on the mannequin. This gives the impression of a tiara, hence the popular name “tiara comb”. The metal prongs would be hidden by the front hair and hold the ornament firmly in place.
It would make a lovely ornament for a vintage bride who is looking for something different or for a re-enactor who wants a sturdy ornament to wear.
