Here is a handsome and striking hair accessory dating from the Art Deco period. The ornament is made from glossy black celluloid with a high curved heading.
The center of the heading is occupied by a solid panel engraved with a design of Mackintosh roses. These have been in-filled with white pigment to emphasize the design. The centres of the flowers are set with black “French jet” rhinestones. On either side of this solid panel is a pierced one with open scroll work.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla comb.
The collage picture includes similar examples taken from contemporary photographic sources of the early 20th century and shows the fashionable hair dressing of the day.
