This beautiful hinged tiara style hair ornament is an excellent example of the smaller and daintier hair accessories which were worn at the end of the Victorian period.
The ornament is made from antiqued silver tone metal and has six wire tines which are attached to the curved heading by a rotating hinge. This hinge allows the comb to be worn in different positions in the hairdressing. However it was primarily intended to be worn above the forehead as a mini tiara.
The design features two rows of “sunburst” motifs, one placed above the other. The smaller motifs rest upon the hair while the five larger ones are raised on spikes, a common arrangement of the period. The sunbursts in the upper row are also graduated in size, with that in the centre being the largest. Faux pearls and faux turquoise stones alternate in the arrangement to create a very attractive mini tiara,
Fashions in hair dressing changed in the last few tears of the 19th century. The styles were simpler and a softer, fluffier appearance was fashionable. Along with these more feminine coiffures hair accessories grew smaller, lighter and more delicate. Mini tiaras like this made from metal filigree were very popular and these styles continued into the Edwardian period.
The collage picture includes similar examples taken from contemporary photographic sources of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, and shows the fashionable hair dressing of the day.
