A pretty star shaped hair comb or hair pin from the late Victorian or Edwardian period

CONDITION: good vintage condition with expected wear. Some photographs show the pin slightly bent to one side but this has now been fixed.

SIZE: 3½ ins h x 1¼ ins w (9 x 3 cm)

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1890s – 1900s

MATERIALS: metal, rhinestones

DESCRIPTION:

This simple yet elegant star shaped two pronged comb or hair pin is typical of the smaller and more delicate hair accessories which were favoured around the twin of the 20th century

The comb is made from antiqued gold tone metal and has two wire prongs to hold it in position. It is fitted with an articulated brass hinge which allows the heading to be moved to different positions. The star shaped motif has six large points, with smaller ones placed between. It is build up in a three dimensional manner to give depth to the design. Faceted rhinestones of various sizes are prong set in the points of the star, with a large blue stone in the centre.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The collage picture includes similar examples taken from contemporary late Victorian and Edwardian photographic sources and shows the fashionable hair dressing of the day.

The ornaments of the period tend to be small, light and more delicate, in tune with the simpler hairstyles which were in fashion at the close of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries. There was a great fondness for romantic or sentimental motifs in this type of jewellery, hence the fact that stars, along with moons, butterflies and flowers were popular motifs for hair accessories.

It is interesting to note that at the turn of the twentieth century all the colour went out of jewellery. In precious ornaments there was a fashion for jewels made from platinum set with diamonds. Costume jewellery followed this trend, and so is usually made of silver, silver plated metal or aluminium set with white rhinestones, faux pearls and other colourless materials.
