This lovely silver tone Spanish style hair comb is an excellent example of the lighter and more delicate hair accessories which became fashionable in the late Victorian era. It probably dates from the period around the turn of the 20th century.
The comb has found long wire tines, which are attached to the bottom of the wedge shaped heading. The top of the comb is done entirely in openwork, giving it an intricate yet delicate appearance.
Two lower panels are decorated with a lacy design of florals and scroll work. Surmounting these is an upper gallery with three distinct elements, and these create an unusual top profile to the ornament. Each element repeats the scroll and foliage design of the lower heading panels. However the two outer elements are each tipped at an angle, with the centre one dropped down between.
I have never seen a comb with quite this configuration.
Comes like this with a high stand up heading are generally known as Spanish style combs. They present a smaller version of the beautiful ornaments work by Spanish ladies with their traditional dress.
Fashions in hair dressing changed in the last ten tears of the 19th century. The styles were simpler and a softer, fluffier appearance was fashionable. Along with these softer and more feminine coiffures hair accessories grew smaller, lighter and more delicate. Airy openwork designs, such as those of filigree were popular.
