Here is a very handsome Spanish style hair comb from the Art Deco period.
The comb is made in a vivid green translucent celluloid and is further embellished with green rhinestones. It has a heading in the classic shape of the unfurled fan, with an attractive scalloped profile. The openwork design of leaves and flowers is typical of the period.
The term Spanish style comb is often used as an umbrella term for any comb which has a tall upstanding heading or top part, which rises proud of the head in wear. Such ornaments are so called in imitation of the lovely ornaments which Spanish ladies wear with their traditional dress on festive occasions.
Spanish style costume and ornaments were extremely popular in the Art Deco period and there are many glamour postcards of stage and screen actresses dressed in this manner.
