Here is a striking hair comb from the Art Deco period of the early 20th century.
The ornament is made from celluloid faux tortoiseshell and has an unusual spiky top profile which is in turn asymmetric. A series of leaf-like motifs arise from the base of the heading, with a gap placed towards the right of the design. Each leaf has an engraved design whose lines are in filled with white pigment to emphasize the design. They are further embellished with dark blue rhinestones.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla comb.
