The collage photograph shows illustrations taken from contemporary Japanese sources and depicts similar ornaments, showing how they can be placed in contemporary hair styles.
From the beginning of the 20th century traditional Japanese hair accessories began to be supplanted by western style ones such as these. Western type combs became fashionable, and were stuck into the chignon at all angles in order to better display them. These newer accessories typically show the influence of art movements such as Art Nouveau and Art Deco for some years after these had died out in the west. This pretty hair comb shows the unmistakable influence of Art Deco in the execution of its design.
The opening of Japan to the West in 1868 created a new stimulus for the Japanese artist both in the influence of characteristics of Western art and in the demands of the Western market. Traditional aesthetics values were reinterpreted and preserved in the works of the great modern lacquer masters and traditional techniques were given new form in the creation of items more suited to the customs of the Western market
