A beautiful Art Nouveau to Art Deco transitional period belt buckle or cloak clasp in antiqued silver tone metal. The ornament comprises a large circular buckle plate with a hook which would be sewn onto the other end of a belt or cloak. When fastened up, only the large circular plate is visible.
This is a wonderful old buckle approximately 80-100 years old. It is difficult to date this design which could be anything from late 19th to early 20th century.
It is made from pewter coloured “antiqued” silver tone metal and has very distinctive Art Nouveau to Art Deco transitional styling with a design influenced by Japanaiserie. Two “Japanese” figures with flowing kimono and elaborate hair styles occupy the centre of the round buckle plate. One is looking at herself in a mirror while her companion reads from a scroll.
It is in wearable condition and would suit collectors, re-enactors or anyone interested in recreating the look of the early 20th century.
