Here is a very pretty matched pair of two pronged combs or hair pins dating from the Art Deco period at the beginning of the 20th century.
The combs each have a curved heading with an openwork panel whose integral piercing is reminiscent of a spider’s web design.
They are made in an interesting two toned black and white effect which gives added interest to a fairly conventional design. This technique was known as “celluloid overlay”. Here, for example, a base of opaque ivory colour has been overlaid with glossy black upper coating. This creates an interesting topography to the “spider’s web” design of the heading. The effect can also be seen on the tips of the tines.
