Here is a very pretty comb dating from the mid century and inspired by Hollywood. Hollywood Regency era jewelry is colourful, bold elaborate, very social jewelry featuring a sense of movement.
This handsome example has a hinged mount which enables it to be placed at different angles in the hair. It features a wreath like motif which is made up of faux pearls in two shapes, round and marquise shaped. It is very wearable with today’s styles and would suit a vintage wedding for either Maid of Honor or bridesmaid.
In the 1950s we see the development of the Neo-Baroque style (called Hollywood Regency in the USA) in jewelry and hair accessories. This favoured the use of thickly encrusted rhinestones, particularly coloured and AB stones, and their combination with faux pearls and other colourful materials in very lavish and rich settings. Some of the most beautiful and innovative of ornaments in this style were produced in the USA.
Such jewellery was favoured by more mature fashionable women, whose complex upswept coiffures created an opulent look. Jewellery made from rhinestones remained firmly in fashion with this group, but much more dramatically styled than in the previous decade. Nothing was too glitzy, large or luxurious.
The collage picture features examples of this type of hair accessory, produced by a company called Diadem, and the classic hair styles of the period.
