Here is a very beautiful hair comb which probably dates from the end of the Victorian period.
The tines are made from dyed steer horn in an unusual asymmetric configuration. This comb mount is topped off with a brass heading that is surmounted with three large balls made from faceted crystal.
The asymmetric arrangement of the tines leads me to speculate that this little comb was originally one of a pair. Its companion would have been a mirror image, with the baseline of the tines slanting the other way. There may even have been a matching back comb with a row of the same faceted crystal balls along the top.
These balls combs were known as “peigne Josephine” and are a great favourite of the Victorian period. They range tremendously in size from combs decorated with balls as large as 1½ inches across to much smaller and daintier ones.
They were produced in very large numbers, and are found with balls of pearl, tortoiseshell, gilt ormolu, coral or faux pearls. Sometimes the balls themselves are elaborately decorated with engraved or inlayed patterns.
