A pretty Victorian cut steel hinged hair comb or hairpin in the form of a star

CONDITION: good vintage condition

SIZE: 4 ins h x 1½ ins w (10 x 4 cm)

APPROXIMATE DATE: 1860s – 1880s

MATERIALS: steer horn, metal

DESCRIPTION:

Here is a very pretty hinged hair comb which dates from the later Victorian period.

The basis of the comb is a comb mount of steer horn with two prongs to keep it in the hair... It has a star shaped heading in cut steel which is attached to the tines by a hinge which renders the comb fully adjustable. This effect is shown in the various pictures.

These “star” hair combs and pins were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century, along with motifs such as crescent moons, flowers and butterflies.

The final illustration shows a selection of sitters wearing similar ornaments and is taken from contemporary sources of the late 19th century.

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The use of cut steel is very characteristic of the Victorian period. Production of cut-steel goods began in the early 1800s and continued until the end of the century, although the later examples tend to be very crude in comparison with earlier ones.

Cut steel combs and ornaments are characteristically made with headings covered with studs of faceted steel and riveted to a backing plate of white metal or brass. When the studs are in good condition and well-polished they give a nice sparkle to the comb.

The great majority of these cut-steel ornaments that we find consist of rather stiff and mechanical geometric type designs. Stars, flowers, butterflies and crescent moons were the most popular in the late Victorian period.
