Here is a large and spectacular Spanish style comb of the Art Deco period. The design is that of an unfurled fan which is further embellished with blue rhinestones.
Another interesting aspect of this comb is that it has been made in two layers, comprising a shiny black one over a translucent one. This gives an interesting two toned effect at the edges of the design and the tips of the tines.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large tortoiseshell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top is often called a mantilla comb.
The final illustration shows a selection of sitters wearing similar ornaments and is taken from contemporary sources of the early 20th century.
