Visiting card cases are wonderful reminders of the more gracious days when ladies and gentlemen paid social “calls” and left engraved cards. Items like this make a wonderful collection or display mounted in a glass fronted case or vitrine.
Here is a very beautiful Victorian card case in moulded faux tortoiseshell.
The design, which appears on both sides of the case, is very nicely fashioned in a formalised gothic design complete with arches and foliate motifs
The base material is very nicely marked and polished. The “tortoise” type patterning is very pronounced, with well defined mottling of lighter semi transparent patches on a dark opaque ground.
Many of the later 19th century personal ornaments and accessories which appear to be made of tortoise are, in fact, made from synthetics. These faux tortoise articles are often very pretty and it is unusual to find two exactly alike. Some of them are very convincing and difficult to distinguish from the genuine material, and are skillfully treated to imitate the brown and orange mottling of genuine tortoiseshell.
