This would make a very topical holiday gift for someone!
Here we have a very pretty late Victorian or early 20th century change purse.
The case is made from moulded faux tortoiseshell which is beautifully marked with the typical “tortoise” style mottling and is a very faithful imitation of genuine shell. The outer covering is fitted with a brass frame. The front has silver pique inlay with the legend “Merry Christmas” inscribed in flowing script.
Inside the purse has three compartments which are lined with blue silk. The lining is in good condition except that one side of the centre compartment has come open down one seam. An easy fix for even an amateur needlewoman!
This is a pretty and authentic vintage item which would make a fine dressing table of collection display, or be suitable for a re-enactor.
The surface of the material in this pretty accessory is beautifully marked with the typical “tortoise” style mottling and is a very faithful imitation of genuine shell. Many of the later 19th century the ornaments and vanity items which appear to be made of tortoise are, in fact, made from synthetics. Some of them are very convincing and difficult to distinguish from the genuine material, and are skilfully treated to imitate the brown and orange mottling of genuine tortoiseshell.
