A spectacular moon shaped Art Deco hair comb in jade green
CONDITION: good vintage condition
SIZE: 6 x 6 ins (18 x 18 cm)
APPROXIMATE DATE: 1910s – 1920s
This striking Art Deco period comb is made in jade green celluloid with a beautiful mottled effect. This is just one of the decorative effects made possible in the 20th century by the use of new materials and production methods.
The comb has an attractive curved profile and the two corners of the heading are “pulled down” to resemble wings. In the centre of the heading is an openwork panel with a beautiful formalised design.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla comb.
The collage picture shows sitters from contemporary illustrations, revealing the fashionable hair style and wearing similar large Spanish style ornaments.
Art Deco was an eclectic art movement which drew inspiration from many cultures and sources. An important influence was that of Oriental lands such as China and Japan. The use of this beautiful jade green reveals this Oriental influence.
These large and spectacular combs are a feature of the early Art Deco period.
