Here is an unusual parti-coloured comb which is the very essence of Art Deco in its geometric appearance. It probably dates from the early years of the 20th century
The comb is made from French Ivory with inset panels of a dark translucent brown. It looks like it was made in two distinct parts and fitted together into this eye-catching triangular design.
French Ivory is a synthetic substance which was manufactured to substitute for genuine ivory. It contains no material from endangered species and is a completely human made product.
Here we have a type of ornament which is often known as a bandeau comb. This is because it is deeply curved to encircle the back of the head like a bandeau. These ornaments were very popular in the opening years of the 20th century and continued into the 1920s and 1930s.
