This very beautiful silver plated hair comb is typical of the late Georgian to early Victorian period. The curved heading has an irregular outline which forms a partly scalloped profile along the top of the heading. The entire surface is further enriched by an etched design of floral character with chubby scrolls.
The comb has nine metal prongs which are riveted to the bottom of the heading panel.
The comb can be compared with those represented in the final picture which dates from the late 1840s. It comes from an engraved fashion plate of the period and shows a number of models with fashionable hairdressing and hair combs. The typical early Victorian hair dressing has bunches of curls at the sides and a plaited or twisted chignon low on the back. Into this is placed a metal comb with repousee work or set with stones. Such combs are very similar in character to our example here.
This type of ornament is often known as Spanish or mantilla comb because it resembles a smaller version of the traditional large shell ornaments worn by Spanish ladies with their native dress. In practice any comb which has a high upstanding heading or top which stands proud of the top of the head is often called a mantilla comb.
