This comb is a great collector’s piece but is certainly not for the faint hearted!
It is made from celluloid faux tortoiseshell and has a very high wedge shaped heading which is no less than 7½ inches high above the prongs (19 cms). The design is an unusual asymmetric one with a panel of open scroll work on the top right hand corner.
Art Deco is an eclectic style and drew in influences from many lands and cultures. There was a great passion for fancy costume at this period and one of the most popular was the “Spanish” look. The final two illustrations are taken from popular glamour postcards of the period. They depict actresses in Spanish influences costume with mantilla veils and high combs of exaggerated proportions.
