This oversized and seriously flamboyant headpiece is a product of the Spanish tourist industry and was probably made about the 1960s – 1970s period.
It is made from faux tortoiseshell colour celluloid with a very distinctive scalloped profile. There is a great deal going on in the heading panel!
The centre is occupied by an arch which shows a caballero attempting to restrain a lively horse. He is dressed in his best fiesta costume. He has a glass of wine in one hand which he raises in a toast. He is obviously having a very good time and possibly drunk in charge of a horse!
On the left we have a window grille, behind which some love lorne senorita is anticipated to appear. On the right is a crucifix between pots of flowers.
At the top below the scallops is a lovely floral border.
This comb is a great collector’s piece but is certainly not for the faint hearted.
