This is an unusual and striking little hair comb probably dating from the mid 20th century. It is made in a glamorous and glitzy style which is sometimes called neo Baroque, or, in the USA, Hollywood Regency.
The ornament has a conventional faux tortoise comb mount with split prongs. Arising from this are a series of metal rays, all encrusted with prong set clear rhinestones, and joined together at the top by larger stones set in mounts. Each "ray" terminates in a large faceted paste which is set vertical upon the top. Pendant from the base of each large stone is a pendant pear shaped faux pearl. The pearls are arranged so that they hang freely and tremble when the wearer moves.
Small rhinestone combs like this were used as evening accents in the glamorous and sophisticated mid 20th century hair styles. The final illustration is taken from a magazine advertisement for hair accessories showing how they could be used to embellish an evening coiffure such as a classic French twist.
From the later 1930s we find that the severe angular lines of pure Art Deco are becoming compromised by more curved, naturalistic forms, and a taste for more colour and elaboration in dress and personal adornment.
In the late 1940s or 1950s. there evolved the style which we call Baroque. The Baroque was originally an important art movement of the late 16th and early 17th centuries, and was characterised by rich and elaborate decoration, heavy scrollwork, and a great deal of opulent gilding. This return to much more elaborate and colourful jewellery was a reaction against the much less colourful and geometric Art Deco of the 1930s.
This vogue for more colourful and elaborate jewellery forms was led from the USA, where some of the most beautiful Baroque style costume jewellery was produced. With newly developed techniques of mass-production America took over from Paris as the leading exponent of stylish costume jewellery for the wider market. This style of jewellery and ornamentation was greatly influenced by the Hollywood movie industry and was worn by the great screen goddesses of the era. For that reason it is nowadays often called Hollywood Regency.
