AN ATTRACTIVE DUO OF HOLLYWOOD REGENCY SIDE COMBS WITH FANCY EMBELLISHMENT
SIZE: Both 2 x 3 ins (approx 5 x 7 cms)
CONDITION: good vintage condition
APPROXIMATE DATE: mid 20th century
Here we have a handsome duo of two pretty side combs made in the typical style of the mid to later 20th century. Both feature a formalised floral design which is one of the most popular treatments in comb headings of this period.
The first comb features a formalised cluster of pink and blue pear shaped faux pearls combined with scrollwork. The companion piece has three large flowers made from red and gold tone metal with large spherical faux pearls set in the centres.
The final illustration is taken from a contemporary ad in American Hairdresser 1960 and shows how such hair accessories in this elaborate Baroque style could be used in a classic French pleat.
The Baroque or neo-Baroque was a revival style of the mid 20th century. It was pure glamour and glitz, favouring glittering rhinestones combined with coloured stones and materials, faux pearls and elaborate gold or silver tone settings. In the USA this style is often called Hollywood Regency from its popularity in the movie industry of the period.
