This comb was purchased in Germany and is probably of central European origin. It has a distinctively ornate appearance which is typical of Biedermeier jewelry. Central European jewelry of this period has a typically ornate and rich appearance and is often decorated with enamel and coloured stones.
The comb has two tines of gilded metal which are intended to pierce the hair. The heading is attached by an articulated brass hinge which permits it to bend in any direction. Such combs are suitable for placing anywhere in the hair and would have suited the elaborate coiffures of the late Victorian period.
The heading is made in the form of a bow of gilt filigree metal. It is decorated with the remnants of white and green enamel and set with multi coloured glass stones. These are faux turquoise, and rubies. Hanging pendant from the centre of the “bow” is a hollow ball of gilded filigree metal.
The ornament probably dates from the 1880s or possibly earlier. After 1890 a simpler style of hair accessories was preferred, although the filigree technique is in accordance with the vogue for a light and delicate appearance in the 1890s.
This is a lovely comb, ornately decorated but not too glitzy. It would grace any contemporary evening hairstyle and would be ideal for the re-enactor.
