Here we have a very beautiful pair of matched Victorian hair pins in the form of flowers.
The flowers are designed as a three dimensional cluster with the centre element being somewhat raised. In the central cluster the gilded brass finding takes the form of a floral shape, with a large turquoise glass sphere set at its centre. Surrounding this are five leaf shaped motifs. Upon each leaf there rests a turquoise sphere.
The back view of these lovely hair accessories shows how they were assembled. The brass framework is open backed, the glass beads being secured upon fine brass wires which radiate out from a centre point.
Two long metal tines secure the hair accessory in place and pierce the hair. These are attached to the heading by a hinged mount which allows it to rotate. This means that the ornaments are very versatile and can be mounted in a number of different positions within the elaborate Victorian hair style.
These turquoise coloured beads of blown glass appear often on hair accessories and jewelry of the mid Victorian period. They come in a range of different sizes and as well as spherical may also be oval or pear shaped. They are found mostly on large elaborate tiara style combs of the period.
Alas, this material is very fragile and such hair accessories are seldom perfect. These beautiful hair pins are in excellent condition for their age with only one minor flaw which can be turned to the back.
