A beautifully made and unusual hooked rug. It is late third to fourth quarter 19th century and was found in New England.
The dynamic design features a geometric center square set within irregular length stripes and surrounded by scroll work. It was hooked using cotton and some wool cloth strips in muted tones of olive, brown, russet red, white, touches of black and mostly pastel color stripes (pink, blue, white).
It has been fastened to archival board and has museum quality framing. Measures approximately 29 1/2 inches x 38 1/2 inches.
Very clean and professionally repaired.
This is a superb example of freehand hooking and deserves center place in a primitive or modern setting.
