In 1959 Hamilton introduced a variety of "space age" watch designs that coincided with the United States' space program. These watches are known as "Asymmetric" and they often got space-inspired names (but not always). Most asymmetric models also featured the electric movements like the 500, 500A or 505. .
The "Thor" perpetuated the modern design tradition while satisfying those who were not ready to take a chance on electric technology, There are also a few asymmetric models that featured mechanical or automatic movement. A good example of a mechanical asymmetric is this 1959 Thor . It was only produced for two years.
This rare 1959 Hamilton Thor asymmetrical men's watch. with it's unique space age triangular shield, was designed by famed industrial designer Richard Arbib who also designed Hamilton's famed Ventura and Pacer as well as automobiles for GM and Studebaker.
Unlike the Pacer and Ventura which had trouble prone unreliable electric movements the Thor featured a top notch 22 Jewel 770 movement with Arbibs Futuristic styling!
The dial is original with butler silver finish with 14k gold numerals and markers is in excellent condition. Crystal is original with no scratch that I can see. Signed Hamilton on the case back is in excellent condition with no brassing, no personal engravings ,
The 10K triangular shaped filled bezel and case back are in excellent condition with no gold wear-thru seen anywhere on the watch, even under a loupe. The gold still looks very thick and lustrous and the gold case back is equally as nice. The corners look great as do the back of the lugs. The inside and outside of the case back are signed Hamilton and it snaps tightly together with the bezel. This is a very rare "Thor" and it's an outstanding example of this asymmetrical old Hamilton. The case measures approx. 38mm long from lug tip to tip and the watch diameter at the widest point is approx. 31mm. The lug size measures 18mm and the watch comes with a very nice new genuine leather band.
The movement is an exceptional 22 jewel 770 movement, this is just another example of Hamilton's effort to be the best. This watch was a definitive example of the era by being ahead of its time (no pun intended)! If you would like to own a real piece of history... you can't beat the "Thor ". We have cleaned and timed the watch and it is running strong, winding and setting smoothly, and keeping time like the day it was made! This is one of the few asymmetric mechanical Hamilton made.
