Thomas Burke (Ireland, b. 1749 - d. 1815) ‘Happiness', 1799, hand colored engraving on paper mounted to backboard, by Thomas Burke after the painting by John Francis Rigaud showing a seated allegorical figure of 'Happiness' holding a caduceus surrounded by putti. Part of a series of four allegorical frescoes (Providence, Innocence, Wisdom and Happiness) executed for the Common Council Chamber in the Guildhall in London (no longer extant) as a gift to the Corporation of London from John Boydell. Framed in gilt wood frame, matted under glass. Measures 32in x 26in framed and 22.5in x 16.5in sheet. Condition: some very faint random foxing noticeable in the image area under scrutiny, toning to mat board, minor nicks to gilt frame.
