Claude William Harrison (British, 1922 - 2009) “Cytherean Bagatelle”, 1982, oil painting on masonite, framed in original artist painted frame, signed and dated lower middle on bagatelle borderline, additionally signed with handwritten title verso “Cytherean Bagatelle, Claude Harrison, Barrow Wife, Cartmel Fell, Grange-Over-Sands, Cumbria”. Measures 37in x 32in framed and 29.5in x 24.5in image only. Condition: Painting in excellent vintage condition, frame has minor nicks mostly at corners. Claude Harrison was born in Leyland, Lancashire. He married the artist Audrey Johnson and their son is the potter Tobias Harrison. Claude Harrison studied at Preston School of Art 1939 – 41, Liverpool School of Art 1941 – 42, and the Royal College of Art 1947 – 50. He became a painter of murals, conversation pieces and imaginative groups of harlequins and masked figures with tempera a preferred medium. Numerous solo and mixed exhibitions including the Contemporary Fine Art Gallery at Eton, Phoenix Gallery Highgate, and the Royal Academy. Harrison published The Book of Tobit in 1969.
