Lovely American Impressionist landscape oil painting by Detroit artist Joseph W. Gies (American, 1860-1935). Oil painting on board, framed under glass. Measures 13in x 11in framed and 9.5in x 7.5in sight. Old label verso reads “Hyde Park Art Shop - Ove Hoffman”, Hoffman was a Chicago based artist and gallerist known for his connections with well respected artists of the early 20th century. Condition: Appears to be in excellent vintage condition, not examined out of frame. Gies was born in Detroit, Michigan and died in nearby Dearborn, Michigan. He traveled abroad to study as well as out west before coming back home to Detroit. He studied under Tony Robert-Fleury and William Bouguereau. Gies was a member of and exhibited at the Scarab Club in Detroit as well as the Society of Western Artists. He also exhibited at the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
