Alfred Payne (b. 1815, England, d. 1893, Illinois) Oil painting on canvas depicting a Beautiful young woman. Signed and dated lower left A. Payne 1884. In period wood and gilt gesso frame. Measures 29in x 25in overall and 23.5in x 19.5in image only. Condition: Old patch repair visible on backside occurs at very top in background color. Small scratch right hand edge of inner frame extends into painting about ½” but is lighter. Overall light craquelure.
Payne settled in Hinsdale IL, outside of Chicago. He was a prominent figure in the development of the arts in Chicago, having many pupils and peers he supported. He died of his injuries months after being run down by a Hansom cab in the streets of Chicago. His daughter, Emma, writing as Payne Erskine, became a very well-known novelist of her time with 10 published books to her name, one serialized in the Ladies Home Journal. Emma's son, Harold, carrying on the family tradition of arts was a well-known sculptor.
