“In Sickness and Health” Fine watercolor painting on paper by female painter Helena J. Maguire (British, 1860-1909). Depicting a ailing young girl with her head propped up by a pillow as she watches a pair of healthy young girls dancing to a street organ player. Helena was the daughter of Thomas Herbert Maguire and sister of Adelaide Agnes Maguire both accomplished artists of their day. Her elder sister, Adelaide died an early death at age 23 in 1875 and may be why this subject matter appealed to a young Helena who was only 18 years old at the time this painting was completed. Despite her youth this is a wonderfully rendered version of “In Sickness and Health” after the original by Thomas Webster R.A. According to the 1913 Dictionary of Irish Artists Helena Maguire exhibited at the Institute of Painters in Water-colours, and in the Royal Academy from 1881 to 1892. Signed with initials “HJM” and dated 16-5-75 (May 16, 1875) lower right and titled center of gold mat. Framed in contemporary wood frame, original matting and under glass. Measures 35in x 25in framed and 24.25in x 15.25in image only. Condition: Excellent vintage condition.
