Holmes was born in LaGrange, IL just outside Chicago and studied at Northwestern University and the Art Institute of Chicago as well as traveling abroad. Holmes settled in Atascadero, California sometime around 1917, working there until 1923 when he left for Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles to work as instructor of painting and drawing.
