Yellow Garage dealer Bob Lutz Antiques is featuring a hand carved and painted wooden long-billed curlew figure. The curlew is a long-legged shorebird with a very long thin curved bill. It is easily recognized with its football shaped body, long neck and small round head. It has speckled and barred brown body markings. A member of the sandpiper family, the curlew is known for its long bill which it uses to probe into burrows and between rocks to find crabs and shrimp which it swallows whole. It also has a distinctive and somewhat haunting call. More prevalent in the Western U.S., the curlew has a fairly large range beyond the shoreline. Although unsigned, this curlew is a well executed representation of the wild bird and with its natural log base makes an impressive display. The figure retains its original paint and its condition is commensurate with its age with only minor wood splitting and paint fading. The pictures provide the best representation and description of the curlew’s condition. The carving stands an impressive 13 3\4” tall and 16” from the tip of its bill to the end of its tail. The base is 6” deep. Both bird lovers and folk art collectors will appreciate this exceptional representation of this striking bird.
