In 1929 “Buck Rogers in the 25th Century A.D.” debuted as the first ever science fiction comic strip. The character that became Buck Rogers actually appeared in 1928 in the pulp fiction “Amazing Stories” magazine in the story “Armageddon 2419 A.D.” The comic strip enjoyed tremendous popularity and spawned a radio show in 1932 and a variety of tie-in toys and products over the years.
Yellow Garage Antiques dealer Jason Phillips Antiques has found the first 3-D Buck Rogers toy ray gun with the extremely rare accessory leather holster. Introduced in 1934 by the Daisy Manufacturing Co. as the XZ-31 Rocket Pistol, it was surely a kid’s most valuable weapon for blasting the bad guys in the 25th century. The gun is cocked by pulling back the handle. The pistol is 9 1\2” long and it makes a distinctive POP! when fired. Because the holster was sold separately as an accessory, the gun and holster are seldom found together. The XZ-31 sold for 50 cents in 1934 and was the first of six Buck Rogers toy guns produced by Daisy over the next twenty years. The ray gun is made of metal, featuring a steel barrel with a silver tone metal ring on the barrel, and a silver tone metal tip on the gun sight. The side of the pistol is stamped:
DAISY MFG Co., Plymouth, Mich. U.S.A.
The handle is stamped with a picture of Buck Rogers. This XZ-31 and holster shows wear commensurate with its age and use but they are in very good overall condition as evidenced by the pictures. For toy collectors and Buck Rogers fans alike, the XZ-31 Rocket Pistol with custom holster has been the must have ray gun for almost 85 years.
