The Yellow Garage Antiques and Tom and Brenda Boytim of Hewling's House Antiques offer an antique Canton syllabub, or pot de creme, with an entwined-strap handle and lid with a berry finial. The term Canton refers to the well known blue and white style of antique Chinese porcelain as well as the Chinese port of Canton. Once manufactured inland, the porcelain was shipped to Canton for the final decorating task performed by Chinese artists. Between 1800 and 1860 America was the primary market for Chinese export porcelain. This authentic piece is artisan crafted in the traditional Canton underglaze of blue set on a white porcelain ground. Its condition is very good with no chips or hairline cracks present. The landscape scene which wraps around the syllabub includes images of homes, hills, trees, a bridge, streams and a fishing vessel. These images have been incorporated in traditional Chinese paintings for more than 1,000 years. Canton landscape images portray the harmony of nature and reflect the ancient Chinese scholars' belief "that all forms of life are interconnected and their appreciation of the beauty and balance of nature." The splendid symbolic motifs displayed on this antique blue and white Canton syllabub offer you the opportunity to own an Eastern porcelain piece rich in antiquity and beauty.
