Here is another incredible offering from The Yellow Garage, a delicately carved wooden bust mounted on a fitted pedestal. The carving is reminiscent in style of a carousel or ship’s figurehead. Since the Colonial era, wood has been widely used by American artisans to create beautiful folk art objects in their workshops and homes. The bust is made of walnut with a lighter wood used for the fitted base. Both bust and base have been stained a rich dark color which has been age enhanced with a lovely patina. Great attention was given in carving the figurehead creating a warm facial expression and highly detailed hair framing the face. Some splitting or “checking” exists on the bust due to the curing of the wood and reactions to changes in humidity. This is a natural process and does not detract from the overall beauty of this artisan’s creation There are some minor chips in the wood at the bottom edge of the bust. The pictures provide the best and most accurate description. If you are interested in folk art wood carving, you won’t find a more desirable example than this exquisitely carved early 20th Century bust mounted on a wood pedestal.
